Dr. Michelle SeguinPortage Health Foundation has hired Dr. Michelle Seguin as its Director of Community Health. Dr. Seguin is leading the foundation’s efforts in more intently focusing on the underlying social determinants of health and their influence on individual, population, and community health.

“I am thrilled to join the team and eager to collaborate with community members in this new role,” said Dr. Seguin, who started in this administrative role at PHF in April. “I believe Portage Health Foundation has the unique opportunity to be a catalyst for community health improvement and promotion through addressing the broader social determinants of health within our four-county community.”

The meaningful work she’s doing to improve the community’s health can already be seen in some of the programs she’s part of and research she’s completed.

Dr. Seguin’s working to advance what was learned by her “Prescription for Health Research” project, the first prescription produce program in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She is also actively involved in community health initiatives aimed at bridging local food and health systems, including the Downtown Houghton Farmers Market and the Western Upper Peninsula Food Systems Council, which she was recently appointed to.

“We are excited to have Dr. Seguin’s medical expertise and guidance embedded in our staff,” Executive Director Kevin Store said. “Her experience as a family medicine physician is an invaluable asset for PHF and our community partners.”

Dr. Seguin is a board-certified family medicine physician who graduated from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and completed her residency at the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program.
